Cloud strategy in a multi-cloud world

From a debate called #cloudtweetchat, between teams of cloud experts and Dell technologists have emerged many interesting points of view.

To better understand the role that good information technology can play in a company, it is necessary to understand if there is a centralized cloud strategy and who is driving it. This strategy should not only be the task of the CIOs, but a combined effort with the CTO (chief technical officer), and the developers, who together form a cross-functional team..

It is also true, however, that not all companies have a CIO, in these cases it is the corporate architecture that should guide the cloud strategy.

The advantages of a centralized cloud strategy are multiple:

One of the main disadvantages of a fragmented cloud strategy is the additional complexity required for both the architecture and the maintenance of applications on all platforms.
Any fragmentation goes against efficiency and reduces value, so a fragmented strategy generates complexity, increases costs and slows down the organization.

It has also emerged that many companies use the multi-cloud with quite satisfactory results.

It is important that the entire organization supports a cloud strategy, because what often compromises the consistency of a good strategy is the difference between the underlying platforms and the methods of interfacing with them. Only one underlying platform avoids possible barriers.

To lay the foundations of a correct strategy, it is important to ask yourself what you need to go where, and what economic aspects of your organization should be observed.

Also, how can technology partners make the path to innovation easier with the cloud?

The solution is to embrace openness from technology partners, who must support customers on any cloud they need or want to use.

The idea of a single source dealing with IT does not work in the as-a-service economy, as no provider has all the answers.

Technology partners must therefore be committed to listening to the customer and advising them on what they need, not what gives them the most profit.

In addition to this, they must help clients to re-evaluate their needs, being open to a possible change in approach.  

Summarizing these are the main points for a winning strategyundefined:

  • Understanding the needs of the business from the stakeholders' point of view.
  • Working together to find solutions.
  • Considering the importance of what is already in place.  

All this to build a sustainable cloud computing strategy staged to avoid undue risk or the blocking of innovation.
